Utilities (Water & Sewer) Division of the Department of Public Works - Water Main Cleaning and Re-Lining
As part of the Department of Public Works ongoing maintenance program, the water system in many neighborhoods is being improved to assure continued dependable water service and excellent water quality. Where the size or age of the existing water main does not meet City of Newton standards a new water main will be installed. When a water main is properly sized, but requires rehabilitation, the City rehabilitates the existing water main through cleaning and cement lining.
Cleaning and cement lining involves scraping the inside of the main to remove accumulated materials, followed by the application of a thin coat of cement to protect the main from further corrosion. Both processes improve the quality, taste, odor, flow, and /or color of the water.
When the mains in a neighborhood are taken out of service to be either replaced or cleaned and relined, residences are provided with water by means of a temporary by-pass system. Connections are made to bypass pipes laid alongside the curbs on each street. Every effort is made to ensure that normal water service is maintained at all times.
