27th Annual

Village Day 2002

On Sunday, June 9, 2002, under occasionally brilliant blue skies, the village of Newton Highlands enjoyed its 27th annual Village Day event. The festivities took place along Lincoln Street between Walnut Street and the old Hyde School between 12 noon and 5 PM. Other weekend events that transpired included the "Village Day Dance" on Friday, June 7 (music provided by Harney Entertainment), the "Family Dance" on Saturday, June 8, along with "Teen Band Night," also on Saturday, June 8.

Many merchants and organizations demonstrated their community spirit by supporting Village Day, the Silent Auction, and the Baker’s Contest. Please accept our heartiest thanks! You will all be individually recognized in an upcoming Newsletter. Also, special thanks go to JSR Merchandising for the T-shirt discount. To the many individuals who have put time and effort into making Village Day a success, thanks go out to all!

The Highlands Footrace opened the day’s events for Village Day. Many runners signed up for the race, with the course beginning on Lincoln Street and winding its way down Woodward Street and eventually to Waban and then back to the center of Newton Highlands. A bevy of trophies awaited the winning runners! Although the competition was fierce, one man emerged as the winner of the Road Race for 2002. The course of the race extended a total of three miles. While the footrace was going on, other activities were well under way. The St. Paul’s Church Boutique Sale was one such venue. Meanwhile, back at the road race, as the runners made their way across the finish line and accepted their trophies, the Tea Garden Bakers’ Contest began, with children and adults invited to enter. This took place at the Women’s Club on Columbus Street.
