COMMUNICATIONS:
Bob Smith called Keith regarding replacement of shrubbery at fountain, which would cost approximately $200.
David spoke to Marcia Coles who asked that the Council note that she saw a giant rat in the vicinity of the MBTA property. Keith and David will check the property for any garbage that is not being collected by the T. Marcia also said that the Store 24 had a lot of kids hanging around at night. The Council suggested that the police be called. She also mentioned a problem with skateboarders on the sidewalk.
ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS:
Approval of Minutes: July 18, 2002 and September 18, 2002
Treasurer’s Report: Balance is $4,340.45
REPORTS AND DISCUSSIONS:
Hope Fountain (at Walnut and Forest)
Council approved allocation of funds for replacement of shrubbery at Hope Fountain, up to approximately $200. Bob Smith reported that the ring of bushes around the fountain have been run over by cars. The bushes may also be trimmed to shorter height.
Halloween Party
Keith mailed Amy Mazur to ask if she wanted to report anything. Everything is going well. She will report after the party. Doug Smith wrote Keith that the cost of the party will be approximately $450. Motion was passed to allocate the funds. Patty mentioned that there is always a need for help with construction and for actors. Party to be held 10/27.
Village Day
Reviewed the receipts and expenses. Bill to review spreadsheet discrepancies.
Srdjan reported that he has spoken to a person who has volunteered to be a third co-chair for next year. (Srdjan’s neighbor) Another possibility will be Katie Dallas.
Sunday 10/20 is the Autumn Fair in Newton Center, where it would be a good idea to distribute programs or other information to give out to booths in order to raise interest in signing up for Village Day next year. David will hand out some flyers.
Brigham House
David Oliphant will co-chair the Fall fundraiser. They have requested from area restaurants donations of entrees that will be bid upon and redeemed by bid winners. Expectation is to raise approximately $10,000.
There will be a special Halloween Night at Brigham House; they will be open later and have extra staff.
Nominating Committee for Council
Keith spoke to Janet Zerlin Fagan; committee has been on hiatus for the summer. David Cardozo will come to next meeting.
Newsletter
Next newsletter will be January (about a week before the Winter Social). Copy deadline will be December 31.
Web Site
Discussed putting Halloween party pictures on the web site.
Parking Regulations
No new developments. There is still an issue with crosswalks/extra parking space on Lincoln Street that creates difficulty for handicap crossing.
Development
Skateboard park - Committee selecting sites decided that the Newton Highlands site would not be acceptable to the neighborhood, and they are looking for sites that are T accessible. Report will come out in a few months.
Nail Salon - Council expressed concern about legality of blue neon sign. Keith will discuss with George Mansfield.
Mayor’s Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee will give a presentation on process on 10/29.
Next meeting November 21.
