OFFICE for VOLUNTEER SERVICES
HISTORY
From 1998 to 2000, a group of committed volunteers called “NewtonSERVES” worked on the coordination of a citywide day of community service as part of the Newton2000 project.
Held April 9, 2000, this servathon exceeded expectations as over 1500 volunteers turned out to work on 52 projects across the city! That endeavor launched this Office for Volunteer Services that opened in January 2001.
We welcome your participation as we pursue the three major goals of the OVS:
- To be a clearinghouse by publishing the current volunteer opportunities at local non-profits, community service agencies and city departments to residents so they know where they can locally volunteer their time and expertise.
- To sponsor the annual fall Volunteer Job Fair so non-profit groups can market their volunteer needs to the public and residents can come “meet & greet” the local agencies.
- To coordinate the annual NewtonSERVES Day of Community Service throughout Newton each spring (April).
Help us to “build community through service”!
