Next Steps on the Newton North High School Renovation Project

The Newton North High School Task Force yesterday issued a draft of their recommendations for a large hybrid addition with renovation of the existing building. As a result, Mayor David B. Cohen held a special press conference in his office to outline plans for moving forward on the Newton North High School renovation project. Joining him were President of the Board of Aldermen Brooke K. Lipsitt and School Committee Chair Anne Larner; Dr. Michael Jellinek, chair of the task force, was unable to attend.

Recommended plans for this project are as follows:

  • Feasibility Study
The School Committee will oversee a study to review the viable alternatives proposed by the Newton North High School Task Force. Their goal will be to present to the Mayor by September 2003 a recommendation that meets the educational needs of NNHS students.
  • Resolution
The Mayor will prepare a resolution for the Board of Aldermen to review, for authorization of an expenditure of up to $100,000 for the feasibility study from the funds already allocated for the Newton North High School renovation project
  • Financing Proposal
The Mayor's Office will prepare a financial plan showing how the proposed project can be financed within the existing capital budget.
  • Request for Advisory Ballot Question
Mayor Cohen will request the Board of Aldermen to approve placing an advisory question on the November 2003 ballot to assess community support for the large hybrid addition and renovation option proposed by the NNHS Citizens' Task Force.

Mayor Cohen reiterated his commitment to ensuring the safety, quality of education, and excellent academic environment for the children at Newton North High School as this project proceeds.
