Types of Permits issued by Parks and Recreation:
  Field Permit
Special Event Permit

  • any activity that would take place inside a Parks and Recreation Department Building, gymnasium or meeting room.

  • Recognized Newton Youth and Programs that have special requests as part of their permit application such as tournament requests or other special circumstances other than the normal athletic use.

Application Process:    
 
  • Applications are available beginning February 1 of any year at the Newton Parks and Recreation Office, 70 Crescent Street, Newton, MA 02466, or by calling    617-796-1500 during office hours of 8:30 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday and extended hours Tuesday evening until 8 PM.

  • Applications are not accepted until February 1 for picnic or field permits. Those applications received before February will be processed last.

  • Applications must have the appropriate, Non-Refundable Fee, (non-refundable only if a permit is issued), if no permit is issued, or permit is denied, fees will be returned.
  • A self-addressed, stamped envelope accompanying the request must also be enclosed or no action will be taken. Checks should be made payable to the City of Newton.
  • Only Newton Residents may obtain a Picnic or Field permit or Special Use Permit and their signature implies that they take full responsibility for the group they are obtaining a permit for.

  Field Permit Sessions:  Field-Facility-Building and Picnic Information
 

The Parks and Recreation Department offers fields for general athletic sport use by Newton residents only on a permit basis, weather conditions permitting, first paid first served. Field Permits are divided into three sessions:

April 1 through Mid-June(Permits issued approx. March 31)

Monday after Father's Day through August 19 (Permits issued approximately June 10)

First Weekend after Labor Day through November 15 (Permits issued approximately August 31)

  Recreation Buildings:
    The Recreation Manager in charge of the facility schedules each of the Recreation Buildings and facilities for operation. If you wish to contact the manager to inquire about use, please click on the name and send an e-mail or call 617-796--1500 and ask to speak with the appropriate manager for the site you are requesting.
  Auburndale Cove Picnic Areas & Building -West Pine Street
    This multi-purpose recreation facility is situated along the scenic Charles River and supports tennis courts, basketball, a regulation baseball field, life course, modular and free standing play equipment, in addition to 4 picnic sites with grills and tables, and a building with restrooms. No Field permits are issued with Picnic Permits.

  Burr Park Fieldhouse –off of Waverley Avenue
    This facility is a general-purpose area suitable for meetings. It is the home of Kid's Korner - learning program for pre-schoolers and toddlers ages 3 to pre-kindergarten. Kid's Korner operates half-day sessions during the school year and is a pre-school day camp in July and August.

    This facility located in Upper Falls has a full size gym, meeting room, kitchen, outside play equipment and softball field.

Located in the Nonantum section of Newton, this recreation center has a gym, kitchen, meeting area, outside soccer/softball field, tennis courts and play apparatus.

  Jeannette Curtis West Recreation Center (The Hut) -Tyler Terrace
   

This facility, with a newly renovated gym, is located on the Newton Centre Playground. In addition to the gym, the building has two small meeting areas. The Hut is home to the Centre Acres Summer Program and the Mason rice After School Program, and hosts a variety of adult and youth specialty programs.

  Lower Falls Community Center -Grove St
    Located at the site of the old Hamilton School, this facility has an elementary gym, arts and crafts room, music and play room, meeting room, full kitchen and reading room all available for small parties and functions.

  Nahanton Park -Nahanton Street
    This public recreation area is located on 55 acres along the Charles River in Newton Centre bordering Needham. The nature Center has a small meeting room, office, and restrooms and efficiency kitchen. The facility is available for lectures and meetings. Nahanton Park also has nature trails, fishing, soccer, softball and Community gardens.

  Picnic Permits:
 
  • The Parks and Recreation Department issues permits for picnics at the Auburndale Cove, West Pine Street, Auburndale. The "cove" is situated along the scenic Charles River.
 
  • Picnic areas will accommodate groups of up to 50 or 100 persons. Permits are issued to Newton Residents Only, and may be obtained for weekdays and weekends, Memorial Day through Labor Day, or weekends only in April, May and September.
 
  • The use of alcohol is not permitted at the Auburndale Cove unless a group wishes to put the alcohol for sale to its users. This will require the application of a special use permit available on this site and license from the City of Newton Alcohol Commission.
 
  • Additionally, the use of amplified music, live music and kiddy rides are not allowed without the specialty use permit and specific approval of the various departments that would be involved (legal, inspectional services, police, fire, health and EMS).
    Cars, trucks and motorcycles are not allowed in the park. There is ample parking in the lot on West Pine Street.
 
  • Saturday and Weekday permits are available from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM; Sunday permits are available from 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM.
