The City of Newton through it's Department of Information Technology has won the award for having the best municipal geographic information system in New England. Doug Greenfield, the city's GIS Administrator accepted the award for the city given by a committee of surveying and mapping organizations. He gave a presentation and led a discussion session on what it takes to run a successful Geographic Information System at the "Practical Applications in the Geospatial Information Sciences" conference in Providence, Rhode Island. This is a national conference sponsored by the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping and the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.
The City of Newton's Geographic Information System was on display in front of a national audience where it served as an example for communities that are or will be getting started on a GIS program. The city will also be featured in an article in "Professional Surveyor" magazine.
