HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DROP OFF COLLECTIONS

The HHW facility is closed until May 2012

2011 dates*:

Wednesdays: May 11th-June 29th

Wednesday: July 20th

Wednesday: August 17th

Wednesdays: September 7th-October 12th

Saturdays: May 21, June 25, September 17, October 15

Collections are held at the Rumford Avenue Resource Recovery Center on the designated collection days* from 7:30am-12:30pm.

*weather dependent, check during times of extreme weather (rain, heat, etc.)

Please note that the facility is closed in July and August, except for July 20th and August 17th.

GUIDELINES:

  • NEWTON RESIDENTS ONLY – Proof of residency is required.
  • Residents are limited to one car trunk load.
  • No more than 5-gallons of a single material and no more than 12-gallons total.
  • NO LATEX PAINT ACCEPTED (click here for other disposal options)
  • COMMERCIAL VEHICLES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ACCESS TO THE HHW COLLECTION. (Please use a personal vehicle when seeking access to this residential program.

 Do not bring latex paint – latex paint can be dried out and placed in trash or brought to the Paint Exchange

 Commercial/industrial waste

 Prescription medicines- bring to Medication Take Back Day April 30 at the Police Station

 Moth balls

 Syringes - bring to Sharps Take Back Day on May 21 or Oct 15

 Flea collar products

 Infectious or biological wastes

 Solvents and varnishes

 Propane, butane, other flammable gases

 Fuels, gasoline, kerosene

 Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors

 Paint strippers/thinners/turpentine

 Construction materials

 Wood preservatives

 Empty containers or non-hazardous materials

 Sealants

 Tires - will take 2 per week (off-rim) as part of Bulky waste. Please call to schedule.

 Pool chemicals

 Asbestos

 Oil based paints and stains: look for word '"alkyd" or "cleanup with mineral spirits"

PCBs, found in ballasts for fluorescent light fixtures, ballast are collected with batteries and fluorescent bulbs

 Lighter fluid

Alkaline batteries (safe to dispose of with regular trash)

 Engine degreaser, carburetor cleaner,  brake and transmission fluid

Computers and electronics (schedule a curbside collection by calling DPW at 617.796.1000)

 Pesticides, Insecticides, fungicides, disinfectants, fertilizers that contain weed or bug killers, weed killers, poisons

Fluorescent Bulbs (accepted year-round at the Depot) Fixtures for fluorescent bulbs can be recycled in metal area please remove ballast and bulbs when present.

 Filled Aerosol cans (paint, bug spray, window cleaner, disinfectants, etc.)

 

How to transport these materials safely:

  • Leave materials in original containers
  • Label any container that does not have an original label with chemical contents, such as pesticide, paint thinner, etc.
  • Tighten caps and lids
  • Sort and pack materials separately
  • Never mix chemicals
  • Do not place waste in a garbage bag
  • Never smoke while handling hazardous material
  • Put containers in sturdy upright boxes, plastic pails or plastic bins and pad with newspaper
  • Children should not handle hazardous waste
  • Hazardous materials should be transported safely separated from passengers and/or pets
