The major change is the creation of a new voting district Ward 2, Precinct 4, which will be located at Newton Free Library, 330 Homer Street.

Mission Statement The City of Newton Election Department is responsible for administering the City’s Federal, State, and Municipal elections in accordance with all applicable election laws and regulations. Additional responsibilities include the oversight and inspection of municipal Campaign and Political Finance Reports for accuracy and compliance with state campaign finance laws, and the certification of nomination and petition papers for federal, state and municipal offices. Further, the department manages the City’s annual census to update population data for the school and other city departments to assure proper funding by the Commonwealth and other sources.
Registering to Vote

You must be registered in order to vote.
Qualifications:

  1. a citizen of the United States,
  2. a legal resident of Newton, and
  3. 18 years old on or before election day. (There is no waiting period).
    You must be registered to vote 20 days prior to an election in order to vote in that election.

You can register to vote either in person at the Election Commission Office, Room 106, Newton City Hall, or by mail.

Mail-in voter registration forms are available at the Newton Free Library and at all branch libraries.

Absentee Ballots

Criteria:

  1. Voter must be absent from the City during normal polling hours.
  2. Voter with physical disability preventing them from going to the polling place.
  3. Voter's religious belief

*** It should be noted that the criteria for absentee voting in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts does not include legal provisions for Mail-In Voting or Early Voting.

Absentee ballots must be requested in writing and require an original signature. E-mail requests or faxes are not acceptable. For further information regarding absentee ballots click here.

Absentee ballots can be voted over-the-counter at the Election Commission, Room 106 of City Hall, 1000 Commonwealth Avenue, during regular office hours.

Absentee ballots can also be obtained, and voted, through the mail: to request an absentee ballot, send a written request to the Election Commission.

Please include in your request your Newton address, the address of where you would like the ballot sent, and the election(s) for which you require absentee ballots.

Requests for absentee ballots may be made up until noon of the day before the election. (However, as a practical matter, if you want the ballot sent outside of Newton, you may want to request the ballot further in advance, so as to allow time for delivery.)

It is possible to have a standing order so that absentee ballots for all the elections that you are eligible to vote in are sent are sent to you for up to one year.

The City Census

In January of each year the Election Commission conducts a census of the population of the City of Newton. The results of this census are sent to the school department and the jury commission. If you have not yet returned your census form, you can reply by calling (617) 796-1350.
