Newton Flu Information

General

  • The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.
  • The seasonal flu vaccine is now recommended for everyone 6 months and older.
  • There are many places to get a flu vaccine including your primary health care provider, local pharmacies, or a City of Newton flu clinic.

Schools

  • More than 2,800 students receive flu vaccine at the Newton Public Schools in October and early November.
  • The original vaccination record is kept in the student's health folder and a copy may be requested through the school nurse, if needed.
  • A copy of the vaccination record will be sent to each student's pediatrician by early 2012, if the parent provided the pediatrician's information on the form.
  • Questions may be directed to the school nurse, or to the Health and Human Services Department at 617-796-1420.

Community

More than 5,000 people have already been vaccinated this year at City of
Newton flu clinics.
Missed them all? Call us at 617-796-1420! There is flu vaccine still
available. Flu shots available through June 2012; nasal spray flu vaccine
available through Jan. 8, 2012.

When you call, you will be asked to provide your name and telephone
number. A nurse will call you back to schedule a time to come into the
Newton Centre office to receive a flu
vaccine.
All Newton residents age 6 months and up are welcome by appointment only.
