The Card shows: Colored lithograph of a photographic view of the gorge and Echo Bridge from a viewpoint on the mill dam looking north. The river is low -- gravel bars appear in its bed. The foliage of the trees that line the banks seems thin, perhaps indicating a spring date for the photograph. The publisher's credit runs vertically up the right edge of the card front: "2226. Pub. by The Boston Post Card Co., Boston-Berlin." The card was used. The postmark is faint, but it seems to be from Halifax, Canada on August 29, 1912 -- a date supported by the message written across the left side of the back, even though the card says "This side for address only." The message, addressed to Miss Laura Fewkes, 8-3 Maple St., Newton, Mass., is in difficult handwriting. It reads in part, "Dear Laura: This a Mass. postal which I had with me so send it along. Am on train at Stell(. . .) N.S. Had a good trip to Halifax and its fine to-day. The country is beautiful. Your friend, Miss Campbell." The card's upper corners are bent, and there is a tear in the left edge. Postcard type: Undivided Back Estimated Date of Publication: Before 1907 Postmark Date: 1912 |
