Manufacturer's No.: G 6962

Village: Upper Falls
Filed: Charles River - Norumbega Park
Keywords: Bridges / Aqueducts / Dams, Rivers / Brooks

The Card shows:
A tinted lithograph of a photographic view of the aqueduct from a viewoint on the western bank of the Charles just above the dam at the lower end of Hemlock Gorge. The river is very low -- a dock on the eastern bank is high above the water. It carries a 1905 copyright line above the caption.

Two copies of this card are in the collection. Both are numbered G 6962, but they are not identical. This one shows a mass of leaves in the foreground at the left edge of the card that are distinct. In the other version of the card these leaves are a darker, undifferentiated shape. The view is the same one used for the cards numbered A 6962 and 11140 in the collection. The two "A" series versions of the card show the same variation. The hand-colored version of the card shows the darker, less distinct mass of leaves, while the monochrome version looks like this one. The card numbered 11140, a blue-tinted monochrome version of the view, shows distinct leaves. The various versions are cropped differently as well, so that the tree trunks on the right side of the view are closer or farther from the right edge of the card. This indicates that the various versions of the view were not all based on one original printing plate.

This copy of the card was mailed from Newton on Nov. 19, 1908, to Miss Bertha Stacy, Palfrey St., Watertown, Mass. The message on the front reads: "Dear B:- Will not be able to see you until after Thanksgiving. Will see you at dancing school the monday after Thank-- I am not going next monday. May, #34 Oakland St., Newton." This card show some postmark offprint on the front .
