About The Newton History Project

Newton resident Joe Hunter (right) is the creator and producer of the award-winning Newton History Project, a series of programs focusing on Newton history that are broadcast on NewTV, Newton's community access television station.

"Wherever I've lived, I've tried to learn about the history of that area," said Joe. When he joined the production staff of NewTV in 2002 as a volunteer, he conceived the idea of a program on Newton history. "I went to the Newton History Museum and they were enthusiastic about my idea. It's now a collaboration, and they assist me with identifying topic areas and guests."

His video history of Newton's Norumbega Park, "Return to Norumbega," received the first place award in the Documentary Profile category of the 2005 Fall Video Festival of the Alliance for Community Media (Northeast Region). The nonprofit Alliance for Community Media, which represents more than 1,000 public, educational, and governmental access organizations and community media centers nationwide, is committed to assuring everyone's access to electronic media. In addition, NewTV presented Joe with a 2005 Red Carpet Award in recognition of his "up and coming star" status.

The director of communication at Olin College in Needham, Joe has lived in Newton since 1995 with his family. He is a native of West Virginia and has a background in languages, radio reporting, and public affairs.
