The Museum Shop: Publications
From Arcadia Publishing's Images of America Series, Newton illustrates the city's development from a community of scattered farmhouses and five small villages in the 1830s to the Garden City of the Commonwealth one hundred years later. Written by Newton historian Thelma Fleishman, the book contains more than 200 photographs from the Newton History Museum collections. Signed copies of the book are available at the Homestead for $18.99, unsigned copies on sale for $9.50.

Rivers, Roads & Rails: Mapping Newton is the companion volume to the Museum's 2001-2002 exhibition that brought together, for the first time, early manuscript maps and 19th century lithographs from the Museum collection to chart the city's growth from its origin as a part of Cambridge to its present as a metropolis bisected by major roads and rail lines. In paperback, 28 pages. $5.00

Discovering Charles Johnson Maynard Naturalist and Teacher chronicles the career of Maynard, born in Newton in 1845, a naturalist whose boyhood interest in nature, and especially birds, became a life-long passion. Lacking formal scientific training, he made his living as a collector, taxidermist, and publisher of his own works, including Records of Walks and Talks with Nature, a remarkable book that grew out of the bird classes that he taught in Newton for 40 years. Written by Susan D. Abele, the Museum's Curator of Documents and Photographs, who prepared the Museum's 2002 exhibition on Maynard. In paperback, 30 pages. $8.00
