VA New England Co-payment Information
PRESS RELEASE
January 24, 2001
BOSTON - As the Massachusetts veterans' population ages, they have an ever-growing need to pay out greater amounts of money for costly prescription drugs. The Massachusetts Department of Veterans' Services has informed the Commonwealth's veteran population that prescription drugs are now available through the VA for only $7 for a 30-day supply or at no charge if the veteran cannot afford to pay. In addition to providing state benefits to veterans, the Department's responsibility is to inform veterans about available benefits either from the State or Federal governments and to assist in obtaining them. According to Commissioner of Veterans' Services, Tom Kelley, "We want every Massachusetts veteran to know there is a new program making available low-cost prescription drugs to eligible veterans now available from the Veterans Administration -- regardless of a veteran's economic circumstance or if the need is service connected. Every city and town in the Commonwealth has a Veterans' Agent who is available to guide local veterans in obtaining a 30-day supply of a prescription drug for only $7.00 or free in some cases."
Veterans do not have to have a service-connected disability to take advantage of this new program. Veterans with a discharge other than dishonorable are eligible to enroll in the VA Healthcare system and to see a VA doctor to verify the need for a current prescription or prescriptions. There is minimal charge for the visit to the VA doctor usually covered by the veterans' own medical insurance plan. The veteran is then required to pay only $7.00 for every 30-day supply of each VA prescribed medication. If veterans are either disabled or on a limited income they can visit VA doctors and receive prescriptions on a no-fee basis.
To find out more about VA Healthcare benefits, veterans are advised to call or visit their local Veterans' Agent. Every Massachusetts city and town has a Department of Veterans' Services and a Veterans' Agent available to help local veterans. The VA can be called toll-free at 1-877-222-8387.
Former Military Personnel May Be Entitled to Free Eye Glasses
From the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts, 02130
Veterans who are ten percent service connected for any reason are entitled to free eye glasses from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Veterans who are interested in this benefit should call the VA Outpatient Clinic in Boston at (617) 248-1377 to schedule an appointment for a complete eye examination. Not only will this determine what prescription glasses are needed, but also eye health will be thoroughly evaluated. This is prevention eye care which allows doctors to manage eye conditions more effectively.
To accommodate veterans who can only come after normal business hours, appointments are now available as late as 7:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Friday appointments are available as late as 3:15.
The VA Outpatient Clinic, located at 215 Causeway Street in Boston, is part of the Boston VA Medical Center, a comprehensive, integrated system of health care, providing high quality clinical programs and services to veterans throughout New England.
