Newly elected co-chairs Kay Schmidt (a longtime activist on family diversity issues) and Chris McLaughlin (community activist and union organizer) have put forward an ambitious agenda around Women’s History Month in March, and a seminar in the fall.

Mayor Cohen applauds the important work of the Commission in providing an understanding of the role of past generations of women in making Newton what it is today; and in advancing the quality of lives, aspirations, and needs of current Newton women. The Commission meets monthly, and provides support, advocacy and resource referrals to women of all ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnic origins, and neighborhoods.

"Thanks to such citizen volunteerism, the Women’s Commission is a vibrant activist organization," said Mayor Cohen. "It plays a critical role in building community through service to women, as well as in sponsoring events that bring people together."

To commemorate Women’s History Month, the Women’s Commission is sponsoring "A Celebration of Newton Women" on Saturday, March 23, 2002 from 1 to 4 PM at the New Art Center at 61 Washington Park in Newtonville, to honor women in the community who have made significant contributions. The Newton Voice of Women will also exhibit materials from the Peace and Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. All are welcome, though space is limited; so please arrive early. For more information about this upcoming event and other related activities, or the Commission and women’s services, please visit the City of Newton website at www.ci.newton.ma.us and click on "Women’s Commission," or call (617) 796-1100.
